Did You Know?

Our Food Bank recovers food from businesses in Squamish and distributes safe and quality food to those in our community who need support. We collect food that is fit for comsumption but not fit for sale. Some of these items maybe too close to their best before dates, damaged packaging or not desirable through the eyes of customers.

All items are brought to the Food bank for inspection and are available for redistribution through our Food Bank program.

From May to December of 2016 we diverted nearly 60,000lbs of food from the landfill. This helped us to feed families, youth, seniors and others who are struggling to make ends meet.

$31 billion dollars worth of food is wasted in Canada each year, this is approximately 40% of food produced in Canada annually. Over 30% of fruit and vegetables are rejected by grocery stores because they are not attractive enough for consumers.

Going forward, our Food bank hopes to join Squamish Helping Hands in increasing the amount of food that is recovered from local retailers. We are fortunate to have businesses in our town that do support Food Recovery but we all still have a long way to go. Speak to your local grocer’s and find out how they contribute to recovering food.
